Common Loon.
Gavia immer Gaviidae
9 Aug.-the southern tip of the island
(N.E.-ward) When I slanted my
binoculars, they turned back
the way they had come,
surprising hard for about
10 feet. Then relaxed again
& continued their previous
course. About every 5 sec.
they would slip their bills
under the water. Traveled
100 ft before diving. Stayed
under 21 sec. Up. Com-
menced slipping bills
again, Swimming slowly,
they traveled about 50 feet
then dove again (34 second
between dives. Up again in
17 seconds. Dove in 12 sec.
By now they were opposite the
tip of the island. The dis-
tance from where they dove
to where they came up
was about 460 feet. Down
again after a float on the
surface of about 7 seconds.
Continued diving until were
out of sight around Eagle Head.
Their dive is smooth. Hardly
any splash. Head goes down
first. No splashes than a dive
