Chestnut Backed Chickadee
June (con'd) was about 5 feet
from the ground.
Upon examination, I found
six fledgeling chickadees
crowled into a pocket like
nest about six inches below
the opening in the stump. The
pocket was about as large
as my fist. The fledgelings
had a complete set of juvenile
feathers but could not fly
yet. The parents set up
a "racket" in protest. They
both remained within 15
feet of the nest, hopping
from branch to branch
in the goose berry bushes
around the nest, giving
their "chuckadee" frequently
and much more forcefully
than before.
Three minutes after I
had ceased examining the
nest they commenced feed-
ing the young as before.
The nest was lined with
bits matted hair fibres and
feathers.
