jm Johnston 1948 Herring Gull Larus argentatus 10 Apr. U.S.S. Baranof. Seattle - Puget Sound -> Strait of Georgia This gull was seen most frequent- ly. Constantly a flock of about 50 gulls wheeled astern and over the ship. Activity among them was stimulated whenever garbage was thrown overboard. The gulls would frantically seize upon the garbage in a gulls erramble. - Characters: light gray mantli, white trailing & leading edge of the wing, spots of black more or less solid in the primaries, bright orange TIPS OF THE. to light yellow bill with red spot on front part of lower man- dible, pink legs and feet. These showed a grading of characters into those of the Red-crewed wing- ed gulls. Flight is graceful and effort less They wheel from one side of the ship to the other bombing up sharply and falling back with the air currents as they sweep aft over the ship, or twill glide forward into the ships
