M Johnston 1948 Chestnut Backed Chickadee Penthestes rufescens 4 June Juneau, Alaska 0.5 mi N. of Douglas Bridge, West Juneau Rd. A pair of these birds were seen going to and fro from the surrounding conifers to a hole in an upright rotten stump. Frequently they would give their "chuck-ahlee" call - One bird would enter the hole in the stump and remain there until the other bird came back to the vicinity of the stump announcing its presence with the "chuck-a-lee" call. The bird that had been in the stump would emerge from the hole & fly away. The waiting bird would enter the hole. They would be carrying bits of food in their bills upon returning to the stump from the surrounding wood. The stump was about 1 foot high / 14" in diam - with several woodpecker holes scattered around on it. The Chickadees were using one of these holes which
