Chestnut Backed Chickadee
Penthestes rufescens
12 Apr. Ketchikan, Alaska.
Main road 1 mi S. of town.
This little bird was seen hopping from twig to twig among the sprigery branches of a poplar type tree alongside the road. It had a blackish cap, the bottom demarcation running straight back from the bill just below the eye. The vertex of a white wedge began at the base of the bill hanging out down the cheek. Blacks covered the throat. The backs & sides were rufous. The wings a dark dusky gray with small patches of white. It was feeding off the new recently put out leaf buds. The outside byacts were just beginning to peel back. The chickadee would peel off the brackes and then eat the tender young leaves.
