11 April Swanson Bay - Finlayson Channel
1/2 mile below Swanson Bay.
Six of these gulls were seen
flying about 100 yds off the
western shore. These gulls
flew lazily along northward
with about the same speed
as the ship (11 kts) perhaps a little
faster. The flaps of their wings
are not as [illegible] as the Herring
gull. They were identified
by the white head, body and
tail, gray mantle, black wing
tips with white spots near
the end of the primaries, giving
the appearance of white on
the extreme wing tips. They
did not fly too long after
the ship like the other
gulls did but kept about
100 yds off shore. They would
fly at about 50 foot level
and would occasionally
wheel sharply swooping
down to the water and
alighting to pick some
thing out of the water. Would
