Jim Johnston 1948 Bald Eagle. 5 17 Aug Holkan Bay, Alaska 1/2 mi east of bay on Duck Creek. As I came near a place in the stream where the water ran 2-3 mchu. sleep over gravel bar, a mature Bald Eagle flew up & away across the stream. At the place where it flew up were the remains of a freshly killed Humpback Sal- mon. He had probably seized the fish out of the shallow- place in the stream in its attempt to traverse the shallow rapids. When taking off from tree tops, they will drop down forty-fifty feet before getting up normal flying speed. Drop is gradual - at 5° slope.
