J.M. Johnston 1948 Surf Scoters 2 11 Aug drew my attention by a marked increase in the sound of their flapping over the face of the water and the whistling of their wings as they skitter along the surface. Generally a few are moving about always in such a large flock. Whole sections of the flock would skitter one way - then turn another way. Then I saw four killer whale racing in about 5 through the flock of scoters. The whales would ride high in the water, going perhaps 20 mi per hour. I did not actually see them engulfing the ducks, but if closer view could have been taken this is more than likely what was happening. 13 Aug Holkham Bay Alaska 0.5 mi east of Crow Island. The flock stretches from here across the Bay toward Baright. Of the ones near me about 1/2 are American Scoters and
