J Johnston 1948 Surf Scoters 26 Apr. Juneau, Alaska. Gastineau Chan. at Douglas Bridge. A flock of about 25 were swimming and sliriz in the water over the mud flats. Tide was in water over flats was about 10 feet deep. 25 May Gastineau Channel 0.5 mi north of Marmion Is. A flock of about 50 were scared up as our boat approached them in mud channel. They started on a northerly course up the chan or taking off, but re- curved to a southerly course then the chan, with the wind. 11 Aug. Holham Bay Alaska Channel 500 yards N. of Eagle Is. In a clear spot of the ebb tide here, a massive flock of these birds were floating on the calm water. (Water was littered with ducks for a half mile - in a string more or less 100 yds wide) They?
