Apr. 10th. Middle of Strait of Georgia
Opposite Vancouver, Canada.
5:00 PM a flock of 3 hens and
2 Drakes were seen flying
eastward across the stern
of the U.SS Baranof. The females
were in the lead. They were
about 500 yds from the ship.
As they crossed astern one
drake swung into the lead
the 3 females fell in line
behind him and the second
drake brought up the rear.
They were evenly spaced themselves
with about 2 yards between. Flew
about 10 ft above the water.
The flock turned northward
and then cut back toward
the west across the bow
of the ship. Characters: an
orange bill, a dark brown
black body, except for
two white patches over the
forehead and over the back
of the crown. Larger than
most ducks. Hens without the
white head patches
