J.M. Johnston 1948 Marbled Murrelet. Brachyramphus marmoratus Alcidae. 9 Aug. Holkham Bay, Alaska Harbor Island, southern tip. While watching for seal from the big rock on the S. tip of the island I saw one of these little birds diving in the channel between Harbor Island and Ben's Island It was about 50 yds from the rock when it passed. The tide was running out. It would dive, stay down about 30 seconds and then come up 50 yds or more farther out the channel than where it dived. This is the first time I've seen one as close to the island as this. Before, they have always been seen in the middle part of the bay where the deep water is. more over, they have been seen in all the large bodies of the inland waters, Chatham Strait, Frederick Sound, Stephens Passage and Gastineau chan, which I have been.
