Marbled Murrelet.
Brachyramphus marmoratus
Alcidae.
9 Aug. Holkham Bay, Alaska
Harbor Island, southern tip.
While watching for seal from the
big rock on the S. tip of the island
I saw one of these little birds
diving in the channel between
Harbor Island and Ben's Island
It was about 50 yds from the
rock when it passed. The tide
was running out. It would dive,
stay down about 30 seconds
and then come up 50 yds or
more farther out the channel
than where it dived. This
is the first time I've seen
one as close to the island
as this. Before, they have
always been seen in the
middle part of the bay
where the deep water is.
more over, they have been
seen in all the large bodies
of the inland waters, Chatham
Strait, Frederick Sound, Stephens
Passage and Gastineau chan,
which I have been.
Their dive is snappy, throw-
