Grebe
Marbled Murrelet
2
4 May (can't) away from the boat.
This afternoon we ran a
pair hours and one dove
while the other took off
and flew away after skit-
tering and bouncing on
the water. Sometimes it
looks as though the bounc-
ing against the waves
is accidental, that is,
it looks like the murrelet
[illegible] is having a hard time
getting up flight speed
and the waves impede his
efforts to fly - At other
times this skittering and
bouncing looks deliberate,
using the bounce on the
waves to boost him
higher into the air.
18 July Stephen's Passage, Alaska
3 mi N. of Midway Islands.
Saw four of these little grebes
in a group). They skittered,
and bounced on the water be-
fore taking off per as usual.
First time I've seen four in a group
