JMJohnston 1948 Grebe Marbled Murrelet 2 4 May (can't) away from the boat. This afternoon we ran a pair hours and one dove while the other took off and flew away after skit- tering and bouncing on the water. Sometimes it looks as though the bounc- ing against the waves is accidental, that is, it looks like the murrelet [illegible] is having a hard time getting up flight speed and the waves impede his efforts to fly - At other times this skittering and bouncing looks deliberate, using the bounce on the waves to boost him higher into the air. 18 July Stephen's Passage, Alaska 3 mi N. of Midway Islands.
