1948 Bonaparte Gull
19 Aug. Holkham Bay - Alaska.
Beach just E of Point Coke.
The B. gulls in the same size flock
(50) as yesterday, were standing
on the small point, or in the
water such as they were yesterday.
By 1/2 hr after high water they
were gone. This is twice they have
been congregated in the same
place during the same activity
during the same phase of the
tide. Some did feed in the
swrles that appear just off
this beach on the incoming
tide. On the outgoing tide
the swrles appear 1/2 of a mile
farther west.
20 Aug. Same - Swerls between Point Coke & Dumm
Pen.
The mammoth flock was feeding
in a confined area 1/2 mi N of the
swerls. They were massed so densely
that the spot looked solid white.
Most were floating + feeding, some flying.
I shot a couple a few minutes later.
The stomach was full of needle fish.
Birds were floating in a flock when shot.
