M Johnston 1848 Bonaparte's Gull Larus philadelphia 17 Aug Holkham Bay - Alaska. Channel East of Harbor Island. 11:00 Hundreds of these gulls were scattered over the bay, feed- ing on the small surface fish. They fly about 20 feet off the water - flatter down to the surface, then dive from about a foot high. They hold their wings up high as they enter the water. Scarcely more than just their head submerges. They then will either fold their wings & set on the water for about ten sec- onds or immediately take off again without fold- ing their wings. Bright, warm day, no wind, cirrus clouds scattered. Tidal flooding almost at high water. 15:00 These gulls were flying in a massive flock at about 1000 ft. The flock was wheel- ing: Suddenly, the ones toward the lower part of the flock began swooping
