Porcupine
14 Aug Holkham Bay Alaska
1/2 mi east of Bay on Duck Creek.
6:30
Porcupine came up from sand bar in the stream bed to the grassy, flat plateau (rise of 3 feet) via a trail thru the brush that we had trampled yesterday when fishing. His head was down near the ground - waddled as he walked. Came within ten feet of me - sat up with his back to me and nibbled on a small alder brush. Back down on all fours. He turned his head toward me saw me, then still taking his amply time he walked into the clump of small conifers (spruce) and alders along the stream. His quills were black. The under hair was a dirty yellow color. Head appeared black - body dirty yellow. Body is bloated just of proportion to whole frame. Head - tail 3 ft. 1.8 feet at back about 1.5 feet wide. Warm sunny day
