Herring Gulls #7
23 Aug Holkham Bay - Alaska.
Besides a group over on Benj
I beach, a group of about
20 was sitting on Eagle I
beach. As they sit facing
the wind occasionally
one individual will rush
quickly toward another.
The aggressor's head will
be lowered & protruding out
forward stiffly; the one
attacked will always
move out of the way by
running or flying a few
feet away.
Frequently one will break
the stillness of their firm
quiet stance on the beach
by squawking loudly. This,
I think is one way they
have of telling stray-
gulls (or lone gulls) where
a group is located.
