Baleen Whale Johnston 1848 7 Aug Fredrick Sound 1400 2/3 distance between Kake & Tyee. A whale spout about 20 feet high drew our attention to this whale that was floating with only a small portion of his back showing (1 ft high + 20 feet long). The spouts occurred regularly every 25-30 seconds. Six spouts were seen before our boat approached close enough to alarm the whale. The spouts came from the forward part of the whale that was submerged about 10 feet forward of the visible part. We approached to within 300 yards. The whale raised the visible section so that about a half of the vertical distance of this body showed like a large black lump. This lump rolled forward & downward until the tail erected up out of the water and submerged vertically.
