seconds. The rear dorsal
flukes are kept in
continuous rhythmic un-
dulation, except when
breaking water for a
breath. During the time
that the air is expanded
& a new breath taken
the flukes are held
still or almost so.
When they turn the
magnitude of the turn
is seldom more than
45° This is because of
the difficulty in check-
ing their forward
motion. Sharper turns
can be executed at the fast
speed, but are more likely to occur at
slow speeds
