M Johnston 1948 Pandion haliaeetus Osprey Pandioninae 3 July Entrance of Wrangell Narrows 1 mi west of Petersburg, Alaska The gray cod were numerous and engaged in feeding on shrimp shells & scrap shrimp from Sheldon's Shrimp picking plant. They would break the surface. An Osprey took its observation position at a height of about 75 feet from the water - Flying (at times soaring) into the wind (5 kts.) Never keeping a vigilance, when a fish was sighted he would fold his wings almost back to his body & plummet at about 75° (into / toward) the water. Often he would swoop up again before hitting the water because the fish had vanished. A few times he would dive clear under, after about 20 minutes & approx. 20 dives he caught a fish.
