1948 Pigeon Guillemot
18 Aug (cont) slow in the water
about 50 yds from where they
had been. When I came within
about 75 feet the remaining
two flew toward the St.
Harbor Island, and alighted
perhaps 100 yds off shore.
19 Aug Holkham Bay Alaska
Chan. East of Harbor Island.
Saw three P.G. about in
the same place that I saw
them yesterday. They were
diving the same flying-
just swimming + diving.
24 Aug Holkham Bay Alaska
Chan. east of Eagle Island.
tainer When the P.G. takes off,
it's body up to about 30-40°
angle from the horizontal,
flaps its wings quickly
and paddles with its feet
along the surface of the water
for about 4 ft. Then lifts
into the air staying close
to the water at first - gradually
attaining visual flying height (6-8 ft)
