M. Johnston 1948 Hair Seal. 19 May Holkham Bay, Alaska Chan. 0.5 mi S of Chundum Pen. These seal have been seen frequently, perhaps at the rate of one a day sometimes as many as fifteen in a day since we have been fishing in these waters. When they are seen they are usually about 100 yds from the boat, with only their head show- ing. Occasionally one will raise its head & neck out of water about a foot, to see the boat. They are always looking toward the boat when they raise that high out of the water. They will stay raised high out of water only for a seconds at the longest. usually shorter.
