July 6 Anchutka Island, Alaska
Cormorants - 16 on low island SE of
island off Makarino pt.
unknown bird - one white bird on same island
as above. Definitely not an Eider or Gull.
Could only see it face on.
Seals - 15 seen close to shore around southernmost point
of shore before coast turns east.
Sea Otter - I nearly stepped on one before
noticing him (o). Apparently it was
asleep. It jumped back "hissing" &
sat 6 ft away watching me. We
had a 10 minute chat (I sat down) & it
relaxed + continued chewing on the base
of some seaweed. Occasionally it turned
its back on me to groom + seemed
very relaxed. Unfortunately I didn't
have my camera.
Mallard - 1 pair
Bald Eagle - 2 nests were found.
(1) a single adult was defending a
nest with 2 large young on a sea
stack on the east-west running shore
line (E. of the pt. described under "Seals"
above). The adult usually perched
on the roof top of a pyramidal bldg next to a lake.
(2) I returned overland to Makarino pt.
