Journal 61 RE Johnson 1968 May 31 Anchitka Island, Alaska (cont.) The small one to the rest in size. The evening was amazingly clear for Anchitka so I spent considerable time taking pictures of the area. June 1 Anchitka Island, Alaska Censused the 4 plot areas again. Results are approx as usual i.e mostly Lapland Longspurs, but one major difference was obvious - the birds seem to fly less. The remain on the ground + walk about feeding or eradic our path. Perhaps this indicates they are nearing the nesting period - perhaps now they are locating a nest site. No sign of nest building. Much less aerial flight displaying + singing. Checked nests with eggs (4, 33) + neither hatched. Completely censused area C (see map under May 28) for nests. The area contains 29 bldgs, 11 old nests and 2 new ones. Rosy Finch West [35] was on a shelf 5 ft up in a granset + contained 4 large young. Rosy Finch nest [36] was within the wall of a long frame building + contained 3 very large young + 1 egg. Censused Clearer, Brauman + Silver Salmon Lakes (see Tables) + the most notable observation was that no Tufted Ducks were seen. None were
