June 19 Warren Peak to Porter Reservoir, Warner Mtns, Modoc
Co., California. - clear, warm, slight breeze.
Rained several times last night but cleared
by morning. Western Wood Pewee heard near
camp at 6AM. Also heard: Robin, Dusky
Flycatcher, Rock Wren.
On ridge above camp heading north toward
(between Warren & Squaw pics)
carry: Green-tailed Towhee singing from tops of
sagebrush. W.C. Sparrow, Oregon Junco, Mtn.
Bluebird. Pika in rock slide on west slope.
A Badger crossed trail not noticing me.
Mule Deer tracks are common and one 2
point buck in velvet approached to 20 ft of
me on trail before noticing me & running off.
On west slope of Squaw Peak the trail
passes through a White-bark Pine Forest &
at 8200 ft.
here I collected a Dusky Flycatcher from
The top of one of the trees at 8:30AM. It had been
feeding & singing 3 notes in various sequences
including the upturned note. A Cassins Finch
sang "where are you" over & over from pines in an
open part of the stand.
at n. edge of pine stand is a cool creek. From
there on north the vegetation is low mats of herbs
& grasses until the trail drops into Juniper & Mahogany
at 7500 ft.
on the w. side of the ridge. In juniper area, 2
at 10:30AM.
Dusky Flycatchers were collected from the tops of
White Fir Trees overlooking Sage. Both sang
