June 15 The forest is composed of four species of conifer: Red Cedar, White Pine, Western Hemlock, and Douglas Fir; forming a kind of rain forest, not dissimilar to that found in Glacier National Park west of the Continental Divide beside Lake McDonald. The Forest Floor is moist and covered with downed timber, moss, & lichens. Other species present include: Wake robin - Trillium ovatum Smilacina sp. Fairy bells - Disporum Mtn. Lover - Pachistima myrsinites Galium sp. Thimbleberry - Rubus parviflorus Baneberry - Actaea arguta Mtn. Maple - Acer glabrum Red Raspberry - Rubus idaeus Snowberry - Symphoricarpos alba Devil's Club - Oplopanax horridus After 9 PM I took a hike around the lake on the road on the west side to the south end of the lake and beyond, crossing Whoopee & Spear Creeks. Both Hermit & Swainson's thrushes could be heard as well as Varied Thrushes. Those remaining in camp set a short trap line in the forest behind camp and they also shot a Northern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus).
