MVZ Trip to N.W. Montana 1966
Journal
Johnson, R.E.
1966
MVZ, Berkeley, Calif. to Wells, Nevada
June 13
Our happy (?), bleary eyed, five man crew
of Dr. Peter Ames, Ward Russell, Dave Conard,
Dave Moore, and myself left the Museum around
7AM, after having waited since 5:30 AM for
the arrival of Dave "Sleepy" Moore, who had
conveniently changed addresses so noone could
find him. This seemed a fitting start for a
trip that was originally scheduled to go to the
Bighorn Mtns. of Wyoming, but (due to the
extreme kindness of the Wyoming Game and Fish
would only
Commission which allowed us to take the exorbitant
total of 3 bird species plus a few shrews, moles, & rodents,
[sarcasm intended]) which ended up headed for an
unknown destination somewhere in the northwest
corner of Montana. The object of the trip is to
catch as many fish as possible (oops), determine the
extent of "slopover" of coastal fauna into the NW corner
of Montana.
This first day was mainly a mad dash (with
Russell driving the lead truck, it sometimes resembled
a mad "creep") to get back on schedule (ie. reach Wells,
Nevada by dusk) & this we did in spite of my own
protests to visit every mtn. peak along our route.
We camped behind a billboard in a clearing in the sagebrush
about 10 miles north of Wells, and fell asleep to the
sweet hum of diesel trucks on the highway.
