Journal R.E. Johnson 1967 Wildcat Canyon, Tilden Regional Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Jan 12. One Ruby-crowned Kinglet was very responsive to my Pygmy Owl call & flew down from a Douglas Fir tree & twice circled over my head. When feeding undisturbed in the tree foliage, it sometimes hovers in the air while feeding. It often makes a coarse tut-tut-tut-tut note. Chestnut-backed Chickadees feed in good numbers high in Eucalyptus (also +bay oak) trees. Short series of notes were sung, probably not full song. California Quail were seen feeding on freshly spaded ground. Two Red-shafted Flickers were seen in Eucalyptus Trees. Yellow- bellied Sapsuckers were noted twice, each time pecking at trunks of large Eucalyptus trees. Several lateral rows of holes were seen, leftovers of previous workings. A Mourning Dove was heard in the distance. A group of Fox Sparrows, Brown & Spotted Towhees, Oregon Juncos, White-crowned + Song Sparrows were seen feeding on the ground together. Fox Sparrows feed in a manner similar to Brown Towhees, i.e. scratch in the litter & dirt with both feet at the same time. One Fox Sparrow chirped from the top of a thistle stalk in a brush patch (the first sign of song in this species). Bewick's Crakes were heard within in full song from Coyote Bush thickets (song vaguely resembles Song Sparrow). Canvasbacks, Coots, Mallards, a Canada Goose, & a pair of Buffleheads were on
