Crowder Flat, 5200 ft., 38 mi. NNW of Alturas,
Modoc Co., Calif.
June 1 - Today I have spent recuperating-
most of the fever is gone but my eyes
are still pretty hot and sore, especially
when I try to read or write anything.
The weather is clearing, with some sun,
but still showing rain clouds although
no rain.
June 2. I spent most of the morning
giving some help to Jesse Drake of
the Forest Service, whose pick-up
truck was mired down in the road
to Weed Valley west of here. At 10:00
A.M. I heard and saw a flock of
about 10 crossbills, and saw others
later in the day. Weather mostly
clear, occasional clouds. See sp.
account. Locality-Juniper Spr., 2 mi.W. Crowder
Flat.
4:00 P.M. - Back at Willow Creek.
I scared a Green-tailed Towhee off its
nest in a sage bush, a few inches
off the ground. There were two young,
looking almost newly hatched, which
were orange brown on the bare skin
with a few tufts of dark grey down.
One egg remained - it was patterned
like this -> [illegible]
ground color white,
speckles gray-brown.
June 3 - Tree swallows noted for the first time;
see sapsucker species account.
