Koupes (193?) Dec 26 Chipumba mine, 5200 ft., 4 ½ mi. SW. Bishop Tmgo C., Calif. was skinned and black. Also the eyes seemed to be covered over and sunken in. The animal was alive when taken but died before I returned home that evening. The fact that this seemingly sick animal was near the tunnel entrance is a fact of significance. Was the animal unable to mispult? Was the sickness due to exposure, too cold? Could the animal have flown to another position in the cave? A fact of interest is that this animal possessed no subcutaneous fat when skinned as contrasted to large [illegible] in back of the upper arm and in front of the thigh of the other specimen (31 77) which was skinned.
