Neotoma fuscipes Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Hooper July 27, 1938 An old letter, dated May 16, 1935, I have just dug out of my files includes information of interest. The letter is from D.A. Festlure, a competent, experienced and careful observer and student of natural history, who was writing from "John Brown Lodge", 2 mi. SW Saratoga, 2000 ft., Santa Clara Co., Calif. The letter reads: "I noticed in Feb. something which might be of interest to you. - - - - - Several times during that month I noticed dead Neotoma fuscipes lying about on the ground. I examined several, but found no signs of any injuries on their bodies. All those found were in Laurel [Umbellularia californica] woods, and generally it seemed, after severe rains."
