San Mateo Co., Calif.

3 in 13 traps set at edge of yellow lupin thicket
surrounded by pea (garden) patches; this
on S-facing slope. 2 in 16 traps set on
same hill but in "graminices" + 1/2 ft. high.
75 set in marshy area (fresh mud)
netted nothing. Feathers set 85 in the
same marsh but some traps placed
next to a sugar beet field and in
wild oats; he took 6 of this species.

July 9-11, 1938
1. 6 in 75 traps set in old apple + plum orchard
and
with grass about 1/2 ft. high. Feathers took
10 in 75 traps set in similar situation.
2. 45 in 110 traps set in old grape orchard
with grass 1-2 ft. high. These animals
undoubtedly are more abundant where
the grass is higher. Also their burrows,
or those inhabited by them most often
have loose dirt before them.

they are the most common kind; not
taken in dense brush with P. truei +
P. californicus.
