July 9,
+ 6 rat traps set
I set 75 mouse traps in an apple orchard and along the rocky thorn bay- oak - poison oak, Baccharis, and adenostoma. Took: 7 Peromyscus californicus, 3 P. truei, 6 P. maniculatus and 6 Dipodomys (4 D. venustus? and 2 D. heermanni?).
Feathers set 8 traps in similar situations but more in orchards undergrown with grass (oats, foxtail) and took: 10 P. maniculatus, 1 Peromyscus californicus, and 6 Dipodomys (of 2 birds?).
July 10,
Set out 50 mouse traps laid out on top of a ridge 1/2 mi. S of camp in an old grape orchard. Wild oats were thick and about 2 ft. high between the grape vines. Burrows of kangaroo rats, apparently, with no dirt before them and Peromyscus m. - smaller and with dirt before them - were numerous particularly near the grape clumps.
Also set 5 rat traps about house here at camp. Adenostoma, poison oak and yerba santa bordered the above orchard. Found this am: 13 Peromyscus m.,
