Olewa Cr., 175 ft., 2 mi. S E Olewa,
Marin Co., Calif.
June 27,
Last night I set 60 traps on
the grass-covered SW-facing slope.
This am found 3 Peromyscus m. and
many spring traps. I had sceptically
sought for kangaroo rats.
As noted above, the northeast slopes
bounding Olewa Cr. are grass-covered
and - as usual for this type of country
all over the Bay region - grazed by
cattle. In the canyons are growths,
as on the slopes across the creek
(Douglas fir, etc.), the density of
the growths varying with the
depth, steepness (in other words degree
of protection of the canyon; the differ
from those on the NE-facing slopes
in having more poison oak and
live oak. On the NE-facing slopes
of Bolinas Ridge the same dense
stands are found as on Drwerer
Ridge. The forests are advancing
up over both ridges, young
tree and other invaders (blackberry
& Baccharis) noted on the tops of
both ridges. Bolinas Ridge, Mr.
Stewart tells me has never been
cut.
