Hooper,
1938
Jan. 31
Area covered by hunt: about as in 1936 -
approximately 20 x 20 mi. (400 sq mi.) - but
not at all well covered by men. Area
extends from Murphy & Angeles down to
San Andreas. As mentioned before about 20
men hunted - 4 from Angeles and all or
almost all the rest from San Andreas.
Bag: Number shot per man ranged from
about 3 to about 30 (No accurate count
made). Total birds: 166- Steller, 63-
California, and 1 Cooper hawk. A scalp of
1 house cat also appeared.
Time spent per man: 1 hr.+ to "all day".
The fewer men shooting was explained
on several counts: (1) Dance Sat. nite in
San Andreas - with "aftermath" today;
(2) Cloudy cold weather; (3) Lack of interest;
(4) lack of competition; (5) "had to work".
Fewer jays collected due, almost mani-
mously, to "cold, cloudy weather - makes
birds stay in trees & brush"; when
disturbed from hiding place, would fly
to tree, then out a other side immediately,
and would not drop from bottom to top of
tree - before flying - as on clear days."
Incidentally, we too found this to be
true, in general.
