Hooper,
1938
Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif.
Jan 31,
the Association. He cordially took us 'in tow'
and presented #us (#) to the other men and (#) with
some desirable information.
'Methods of shoot: No sides chosen this year;
the competitive spirit was diminished but not
lacking. About 20 men shot birds; 30 (#) at
dinner afterwards. Instead of a barbecue, as
in 1936, the group met at 'Jones Place' a
restaurant and saloon in Angles. Each man
purchased his own meal at 50ยข per.
Afterwards, there apparently was to be an
official
meeting of the Association.
We were on hand at 6 PM with Mr.
Grillo. The first hunters to come in arrived
at about 6:15, the last about 7:30.
Jays were brought in (contained on string-
like line of fish - in paper bags and burlap
on the floor-
sacks) and dumped with or without
ceremony" but always with such remarks
as 'How many, Frank, Joe,' etc. Apparently
their hunger drive was much stronger
than their curiosity to get the total
count for the day, because at 7:30 they
all retired to the 'dining room' and we
were left to count the birds and, finally,
with more hardselling, flattering words,
etc., to take our leave.
