we spotted (with lights) many swim-
ming slowly about in pools; some were
laying eggs - hind feet were clasped
together near the genital orifice on
ventral side of body, seeming to
serve to catch the eggs and hold them
together and to some bit of grass
or debris until the mucous substance
around the egg swelled + held
them together. Pool saw pairs in
amplexus Tues. Afternoon; I saw
others wed. morning; however none
was seen in this condition at night.
I set out 100 mouse traps about
10 faces apart in Adenostoma, Ceanothus,
and Q. dumosa, and beneath fallen
trees; traps baited with oatmeal.
Also 2 rat traps - one under log;
one in rock lodge. Wood rat sign
abundant. Saw deer tracks "almost
everywhere" and coyote (?) tracks along
the creek
Found in traps Wed. A.M.: 5 Peromyscus
californicus and 33 P. truei . I discarded
23 Junes mice. One rat trap and
about 10 mouse traps were spring
but empty.
