Jan. 6.
and Dipodomys hermannii and probably
D. venustus, were noted here.
The flora and fauna was found to
be much the same (with local
limitations, of course) all the way
north to Livermore Valley. Very little
toison oak and some toyon
was seen. Oaks were chiefly
Q. Kelloggii (blue), Q. agrifolia;
(lower)
on lower slopes were Q. lobata; on
slopes (as seen at Isabel Creek camp)
was Q. dumosa? (scrub).
Birds noted: Plain titmouse, California
gay, Red-shafted flicker, Red-tailed
hawk, Western Crow, California Thrasher,
Calif. Brown Towhee, Wren-tit, Audubon
Warbler, Junco, White-crowned sparrow,
Horned Owl, Turkey Vulture, Killdeer.
In Isabel Cr. Triturus were found
to be abundant (We had picked up
two from the roadway en route to
camp). In the evening when we
arrived they all seemed to be moving
up-stream. Two kinds were noted:
one rough, rugged, dark; another
larger, more soft + slimy, and lighter
yellow in color. [see note Jan.t)
