[Trip to] Isabel Cr., 2200 ft., Santa Clara County, Calif., and eastern Santa Clara and Alameda counties,
Jan. 6,
Trip made in company with Mr. J. Paul Maslin Jr. in my auto; overnight trip.
First business of day we left (Tues., Jan. 4, 8:30 A.M.) was to measure some big game heads owned by a Dr. Lockwood at Millbrae, Calif. Lockwood proved to be quite interesting and conscientious in his work as a taxidermist. Not like other people I visited he evidently attempted to present his measurements of the heads as they really are and did not "pad" them. He had many (± 75) heads, some of which should be among the "first" in the list. Most of his specimens were taken in western North America by various hunters (not himself) though there were some from elsewhere, notably Africa. Noteworthy perhaps are three sets of bighorn horns taken from western Nevada. He also knows of another person who has a complete head from this same region. There were several moose, mt. goat, wapiti, many sheep and deer, and several pronghorns and caribou. It may be worth while to keep him in mind for sources of specimens.
