Hooper, 1937 Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Mar. 29, The NE facing slope of Bolinas Creek Valley is thickly wooded with humid Transi- tion vegetation: redwood, Douglas fir, madros, buckeye, Ceanothus -- this from Olmos down to Woodville. On the SW facing slope the crests of the hills are covered with grass, while Calif. bay, poison oak, Baccharis are in the canyons. On Bolinas ridge (SW facing slope) near Bolinas lagoon the transition coniferal elements occur on shaded slopes. On the north side of the Ridge this humid redwood association becomes dominant. In summary of the trip from Bolinas to Fairfax via Lake Lagunitas it may be said that the humid Transition elements occur on north facing, protected slopes while Baccharis, poison oak, and Calif. bay are on the south slopes -- open grassland with occasional oak or Baccharis thicket on the most exposed warm slopes or hilltops. Loose ends of trip: Surf Scoters, noted on bay (we were en route to Berkeley or ferry); western grebes - 2 on Bolinas lagoon, 1 near Richmond ferry mole; 1? pleasant flushed from salt marshes (in Salicoria) at Birdwell;
