much as a result of the recent freezing weather.
This morning I found the following animals:
4 Reithrodontomya holicetes, 5 Mus musculus.
One live harvested mouse was caught in a can live trap. The only other live trap found
containing a specimen was a "can" trap—
contained a field house mouse. The rest of
the animals were captured in snap traps
(got8. mouse traps). The water (rain) on
the can traps was frozen this morning.
Feb. 15,
Trapped at the locality "Salt marshes,
giant, Contra Costa Co., Calif. last night.
In the Salicornia and sedge I set out
50 got8. mouse traps, 25 "Benson" live
traps and 6 can live traps. These were
placed for the most part on high ground
above the high tide limit. Trails and
small
mammal signs are abundant here. When
collecting my traps this morning at 8 PM.
I saw at least three small mammals
running under the grass. Some of
the burrows, even up on the high
ground, were still almost full of water,
probably a remainder of the several
recent, hard rains. The soil is still
saturated even on gentle slopes. Last rain was
