S base Granite Peak, East Range, Pershing Co., Nev.
Aug. 3.
Creek flows at the bottom of this canyon;
mint, columbine and other perennials occur
under the dense willow and buffalo
brush clumps along the stream. This
small meadow-type of habitat looked
to be suitable for Zapus & Microtus mule.
Saw deer tracks in the marshy ground
here. Woodhouse jay, gray [illegible] titmouse were
noted. Set 10 mouse traps along the
creek and 40 mouse and 3 rat traps
on an east-facing slope in rocks &
beneath junipers & pines. Shot 1 Entamius
minimus and 2 Uta's yesterday - when setting
traps.
Caught this morning: Along creek: 2 Peromyscus
maniculatus, 3 Reithrodonotmops mepalotis; on
hill: 3 Peromyscus maniculatus, 1 Reithro-
donotmys megaletis, 1 Perognathus parvus
3 Nestoma epida. All but about 10 of the
traps were sprung - probably by wood
rats, since sign was abundant. They
nested & lived in rock piles for the most
part. Shot 2 more Uta and a Sceloporus.
