hands! Sceloporus noted along stream, & in leaf litter. Crepidophorus seen under bushes in leaf litter. Striped racer caught near stream; had Sceloporus in mouth. Saw yellow-bellied racer among rocks & Artemesia on south-facing slope 100 ft. from stream. Saw brush-tits in alder thickets & in Cottonwoods Artemesia clumps near these other plants. Heard jays (of Calif. jay type), robins, rock wrens, canyon wrens.
July 31,
Went hunting this morning - 6:30 A.M. - 11:30 A.M. Followed creek bottomlands up to approx. 8200 ft. alt. Noted collected first Calospermophilus at about 7000 ft. Next one was seen at approx. 7800 ft. From here to about 8200 ft. - on a horizontal distance of + 3/4 mi., I noted 7 more. Chipmunks ranged - by observation records - from + 7800 - ? More were noted below + 7800 ft. Saw ground squirrel (?) burrows - some closed. Mr. Smith, who runs a cyanide gold mine in the canyon, reported seeing a mountain lion at about 8000 ft.
