“down creek”
One half a mile (approx.) from camp, I
found a meadow about 200 yds. long.
Water from the creek is diverted out
over the meadow. Near the western
edge of this meadow, about 60 ft.
from rocky slopes a woodchuck was
found. It was lying beside a small
ditch containing water and was so
well concealed by grass that I
was within 15 ft. of him before I
saw him. I shot both the 12 ga. (8 ch.)
and 4/0 ga. (12 ch.) but the animal succeed
ed in reaching its home in a tulus
slope. Shot a sage hen in the Artemisia
near the creek. Saw a young rattlesnake.
