Moved camp yesterday to our present
site on Rock Creek. Left Smoke Cr. at
3:40 P.M., drove via Round Hole to
Gerlach; secured food, water, gas there;
left at about 6 P.M., drove north along the
east side of the Granite Mts. to Rock Cr.,
then up (westward) Rock Cr. to our
present camp. Immediate area about
camp - which is beside the creek -
includes the following plants: along
the creek = alder, aspen, wild rose, and
birch; on the surrounding slopes = Artemisia
alba? & dry grass; on south slope = Artemisia
tridentata, A. albus? and an occasional
Arctostaphylos and wild rose (in shaded
draws). This morning I walked to the
top of and along the ridge to the south
of camp. Reached an altitude about 500 ft.
higher than camp. Saw woodrat
sign among rocky outcrops. Shot a
yellow-bellied racer on a rocky area,
near top of ridge. Saw meadow-lark
