Smoke Cr., 3900 ft., 7 mi. E Calif line,
Washoe Co., Nev.
July 9,
litter under the cottonwoods, along the creek
bottomlands. Last night Russell shot one
out of a cottonwood near the house. I have
tight
heard them in these trees at least 15 ft.
above the ground and probably higher -
I could not definitely locate these latter,
higher ones. Sign is exceedingly abundant
along the creek. As the result of a light
shower last night there is now enough
connect
water in the creek to several of the
almost
pools (down as far as the automobile bridge
near the ranch house); they were separated
by dry land before the rain. It is now
cloudy and overcast (4:30 P.M.), perhaps
promising more showers tonight. The strong
wind which has blown daily after approx-
mately 9 A.M. (until 7 P.M) has been con-
spicuously absent today.
Collected a garter snake in the grass
beside one of the pools along the bed of
Smoke Cr.
July 10,
Collected a garter snake near the same place
where the one, collected yesterday. Shot a
in
spotted towhee from a willow thicket near
the creek bottom. Collected a lazuli bunting
from a bush near a flat gravelled area, 100 yds.
