Cooper, 1936 San Andreas, Calaveras Co., Calif. April 26, Conversation with one of the sides yielded the following interesting side-lights: Barish robins (= brown towhee) not brought in, but often? shot, mistaken for jay. Jay hunts have been held here for 40 yrs. Usually held in fall of year when few leaves on trees. Seems to be more jays this year than before. Some jays have migrated now [= paired off & nesting, so less conspicuous]. Distribution tion of poisoned grain for ground squirrels leads to death of more quail than any other thing. As soon as cattle or sheep taken out of a pasture, poisoned barley distributed. This grain even kills deer. --- A few days ago 3 burlop bags of cats were brought out from Stockton to a place near here. Were to be turned loose. Herald cats are "big" enemies of quail. A few quail (± 8) were seen in a covey. All others were in pairs. Jays were in flocks or in pairs, approximately equally divided. However, perhaps the jays had paired off and were merely seen in larger groups because they where, driven there as I advanced thru forest.
