Apr, 1936 San Andreas, Colveras Co., Calif. April 26, in Colveras Co. The region north east of a line running between Murphy and Mountain Ranch (=5 El Dorado on some maps) is too mountainous and vegetation covered to warrant hunting there. Total potential "jay-hunt-able" area in County = approximately 500 sqmi. Concentrated hunting: between San Andreas and Valley Springs. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves at the barbecue. Plenty of food and beer and a guitar soon had everybody in good "spirits". Birds were counted before food was issued. One person counted, another checked amounts on a chart. Jays = 1 point; hawks = 3 points. Birds brought in are as follows: jays = 612; red-tailed hawk = 1; Sharp-shinned hawk = 1; Sparrow hawks = 3; horned owl = 1; (Calif.) shrike = 1. Total = 627 pts. 34 men shot in the contest, 12 from Angel City and 22 from San Andreas. Ammunition purchased for shoot in San Andreas = 58 boxes (12-16, 20ga). Cost of ammunition = $35.00 in San Andreas, $1.00 per sportsman was contributed toward cost of barbecue. 76 birds was highest individual score. 1 bird = lowest score. Mean = approx. 20-30.
