Looper, 1936 San Andreas, Calaveras Co., Calif. April 25, Took a third census today around the eastern and southeastern periphery of the town of San Andreas. The zoation, floral + faunal associa- tion is the same as the locality 3 mi. W of San Andreas where the first census was taken. To date, have recorded on census sheets a total of 79 days for approximately 7 miles covered. They are wary + hard to see in dense oak stands. Contacted Mr. Schroverer, the supt. of school and evidently president ? of the Calaveras Co. sportsmen club. Secured the following information from him: Quail rearing pens are being built on W.P.A. funds. Birds can thus be secured from the state Fish & Game Commission held until large enough to turn loose. All quail introduced there in the past have been placed on "game reserves," which are privately-owned parcels of land on which no hunting is allowed. Hungarian partridge and wild turkey have been introduced, but haven't proved successful. The turkeys were placed on a rich man's estate - no hunting ever allowed. They had to be removed from this property because they roosted on the rich man's houses' porch; were taken down to Angels Camp, where roosted in a barn until we killed off 1 by 1, as turkey meat was desired by the "sportsmen".
