Information from Schwosser continues:
Evidence of quail destruction by jays— young
quail seen eaten by jays — only brains of young
eaten. Also eat chicken eggs. The jay popula-
tion seems to be about the same now as before.
The reason for the decrease in numbers of
jays brought in is that the interest in
the shoot has lagged and the men are lazier.
Quail populations are not influenced to a great
extent, if any. Rather the decrease is due
to (1) great increase of hunters; (2) dry seasons
extremely
during the last few years, resulting in decrease
in food & water supply; (3) late rains in the
years, resulting in killing of warm eggs
during incubation period; (4) removal of cover
forest
caused by recent extensive fires during
past few years.
Schwosser said there was considerable
poaching carried out here. As many as
at a time
15-25 deer have been taken out of the
region out of season. It is a commercial
proposition; the deer are marked for Stockton
or the Bay cities. The last few loads
went out under & loads of Xmas trees.
One lodge in Oakland — Elks or Moose —
consumed 25 head.
