The following are important points supplied by Wiley during our conversation with him: The hunt is county wide; anyone can take part who lives in county. (He didn't state that the hunting for jays must be limited to the county alone, but intimated as much indirectly). Those who desire to hunt are divided into two teams. A hunter doesn't know this year, of which team he will be a member until the day of the shoot. Heretofore the teams have been formed at least a day before the shoot. The hunts are an annual or semi-annual affair, most often the former. About 800 birds were killed last year. As many as 1200 or 1500 have been killed during a previous year. All jays and hawks are brought in for the counting. Hawks may be worth 5 points [jay = 1 point]. Cats (which are abundant here in federal state) should be worth at least 5 points; they do more damage to birds than do jays. After the counting of the birds, a barbecue to be held this year at Cafe.
